1949 Bowman #50 Jackie Robinson SGC NM/MT 88

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $8,888

Graded NM/MT 88 by SGC (submitted by REA). Gray-back variation. Of the 233 examples graded by SGC, only seven have been graded higher. Stunning ultra high-grade 1949 Bowman example of Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson. This is one of Robinson’s most striking and popular cards, and one of the great classics of postwar bubble-gum cards. 1949 Bowmans have always posed a problem for condition-conscious collectors. In addition to the many normal problems encountered with this issue (excessive toning, general wear from fragile paper stock, soft corners, centering issues, and print lines), collectors also have to deal with the wildly varying degrees of print quality that characterize the set. It is easy to see why 1949 Bowmans are one of the most difficult of all issues to collect in high grade. The offered example has a perfectly crisp image, with flawless registration, and extremely vibrant colors. Perfectly clean front and back, with sharp corners, and perfect centering. The portrait of Jackie practically jumps off the flawless bold, red background. This card would certainly not look out of place in a higher-grade holder and appears MINT at first glance! Pack-fresh, crisp, high-grade example of one of Robinson’s most classic cards, worthy of the finest collection. The equivalent SMR value in the assigned grade is $3,650. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $8,888
