1940 R335 Play Ball Complete Set (240)

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $10,665

Presented is an exceptionally attractive complete set of the classic 1940 Play Ball set issued by Gum, Inc. This set has been consigned by a pioneer collector who did most of his collecting during the 1960s and 1970s with a very keen focus on condition and eye-appeal. The consistent grade and high quality of this complete set is not an accident! Condition of this set is 25% Ex-Mt (including 4% Nr/Mt), 55% Ex, and 20% Vg-Ex (including a few Vg or slight trim). The 1940 Play Ball set is a worthy addition to any vintage-card collection, and this is a beautiful set! With all the Hall of Famers, current and past, and rare high-number series cards (#181-240), the number of noteworthy cards in this set rivals the number of common cards. The 1940 Play Ball has always been a difficult set to acquire, and the rarity of complete sets is very much underappreciated. It is also a set that has become even rarer in complete form in recent years, due to its extraordinary break value and the inclusion of so many Hall of Famers, and several particularly high value key cards (among them Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, and Joe Jackson, all three of which are gorgeous cards grading SGC EX/NM 80, NM 84, and EX+ 70 , respectively, in this set). As suggested by its condition composite and key-card condition detail, this is a particularly beautiful complete set of this all-time classic card issue. We have selected eighteen cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: #1 DiMaggio (EX/NM 80), 6 Gomez (Ex-Mt), 7 Dickey (EX 60), 10 Ruffing (EX/NM 80), 21 Ferrell (Ex), 27 Williams (NM 84), 30 Berg (Ex-Mt), 38 Doerr (Ex+), 40 Greenberg (EX 60), 41 Gehringer (Ex), 46 Averill (Ex+), 87 Hubbell (EX/NM 80), 88 Ott (VG/EX+ 55), 102 Klein (Vg-Ex+), 104 P. Waner (Ex-Mt), 105 L. Waner (Vg-Ex+), 107 Vaughan (Vg-Ex+), 118 Hoyt (Ex), 119 Alexander (Ex), 120 Johnson (EX/NM 80), 124 Combs (Ex-Mt), 129 Harris (Ex+), 132 Mack (Vg-Ex), 133 Foxx (NM 84), 134 Cronin (Ex-Mt), 141 Stengel (NM 84), 142 Kelly (Ex+), 153 McKechnie (Vg), 158 T. Jackson (NM 84), 167 Frisch (Vg), 168 Wagner (EX/NM 80), 170 Speaker (NM 84), 171 Heilmann (Vg-Ex), 172 Bender (Ex+), 173 Lajoie (EX 60), 174 Evers (Ex), 175 Mathewson (NM 84), 176 Manush (Ex+), 177 Baker (Ex+), 178 Carey (Ex-Mt), 179 Sisler (Vg-Ex+), 180 Cochrane (Ex), 223 Jennings (Ex+), 224 Traynor (EX/NM+ 82), 225 "Shoeless" Joe Jackson (EX+ 70), 226 Hooper (Ex), 227 Haines (Ex), 230 Faber (NM+ 86), 232 Goslin (Ex), 234 Chance (Vg-Ex+), 235 McGraw (Vg-Ex+), 236 Bottomley (Ex), 237 Keeler (Vg-Ex+), and 238 Lazzeri (Ex). All sixty cards numbered 181 to 240 have advertising for the "Superman" set printed along the bottom of the reverse. The entire set is extremely attractive with crisp images and clear focus throughout, with many cards only downgraded due to light touches of wear on the corners or slight centering issues. Vintage sets in this grade are especially desirable, representing perhaps the best and least volatile value in the world of vintage cards. This set, as noted, also naturally has a very substantial break value. The equivalent SMR value for just the eighteen graded cards (factoring in the three cards graded VG/EX+ or EX+ at the lower whole-grade level and not including the 222 ungraded cards!) is $7,890. Total: 240 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $10,665
