1940 R335 Play Ball Complete Set (240)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,740

Complete 240-card set of the classic 1940 Play Ball set issued by Gum, Inc., of Philadelphia. With all the Hall of Famers, current and past, and rare high-number series cards (#181 thru 240), the number of noteworthy cards in this set rivals the number of common cards. 1940 Play Ball has always been a difficult set, and the rarity of complete sets has been underappreciated. It is also a set with extraordinary break value, in part due to several particularly valuable key cards, including Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, and Joe Jackson. Condition is 27% Vg-Ex (including 4% better), 35% Vg, and 38% lesser. Eighteen cards are graded and encapsulated by PSA. Keys: #1 DiMaggio (GOOD 2), 6 Gomez (VG-EX 4), 7 Dickey (Pr), 10 Ruffing (Vg), 21 Ferrell (Fr), 27 Williams (EX 5), 30 Berg (GOOD 2), 38 Doerr (Vg-Ex), 40 Greenberg (Gd), 41 Gehringer (Vg+), 46 Averill (EX-MT 6), 87 Hubbell (EX 5), 88 Ott (EX 5), 102 Klein (Vg-Ex), 104 P. Waner (Vg-Ex), 105 L. Waner (Vg-Ex), 107 Vaughan (Ex), 118 Hoyt (Vg-Ex+), 119 Alexander (Vg-Ex), 120 Johnson (VG-EX 4), 124 Combs (pencil on back, otherwise Vg+), 129 Harris (Vg), 132 Mack (Fr), 133 Foxx (EX 5), 134 Cronin (Vg+), 141 Stengel (Fr), 142 Kelly (Vg), 153 McKechnie (Pr), 158 T. Jackson (Gd), 167 Frisch (EX+ 5.5), 168 Wagner (EX-MT 6), 170 Speaker (Vg), 171 Heilmann (Vg-Ex), 172 Bender (Vg), 173 Lajoie (VG 3), 174 Evers (Vg-Ex), 175 Mathewson (EX 5), 176 Manush (Vg), 177 Baker (Fr), 178 Carey (Gd+), 179 Sisler (Vg), 180 Cochrane (Vg+), 223 Jennings (VG-EX 4), 224 Traynor (Vg+), 225 "Shoeless" Joe Jackson (PR-FR 1), 226 Hooper (Vg+), 227 Haines (Gd/Vg), 230 Faber (GOOD 2), 232 Goslin (EX 5), 234 Chance (Vg), 235 McGraw (Pr), 236 Bottomley (GOOD 2), 237 Keeler (Pr), and 238 Lazzeri (Gd/Vg). This set represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire a complete set of this all-time classic vintage gum-card issue at a fraction of what a higher-grade set would command. The SMR value for just the eighteen graded cards (factoring in the one half-grade at the lower whole-grade level and not including the 222 ungraded cards!) is $2,377. Total: 240 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $4,740
