1939 R334 Play Ball Complete Set (161)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,666

Complete set of 1939 Play Balls issued by Gum, Inc., of Philadelphia, the first of three major baseball card sets it produced. This landmark set includes Ted Williams’ rookie card, Joe DiMaggio, and all of the other major stars and Hall of Famers of the era. The rarer high-number series cards (#116-162) in 1939 Play Ball have always made the assembly of a complete set particularly challenging for collectors. Nine cards, including DiMaggio and Williams, are graded by PSA. Low Numbers (#1-115): 11% Ex, 67% Vg to Vg-Ex, and 22% lesser. Keys: #1 Powell (Vg), 3 Ruffing (pencil writing on front, otherwise Vg), 6 Durocher (Gd), 7 Doerr (Vg-Ex), 26 Joe DiMaggio (EX 5), 30 Dickey (PR 1), 39 Ferrell (Vg-Ex), 48 Gomez (Vg+), 50 Gehringer (Fr/Gd), 51 Ott (Fr), 53 Hubbell (Gd), 55 Vaughan (Vg), 56 Greenberg (VG 3), 82 Klein (Vg-Ex), 89 L. Waner (Ex), 92 Ted Williams RC (VG 3 [MK]), 94 Manush (Pr), 103 Berg (Fr), 112 P. Waner (Vg+). High Numbers (#116-162): 10% Vg-Ex or better, 36% Vg, and 54% lesser. Keys: #122 (EX-MT 6), 137 (EX 5), 143 Averill (GOOD 2), 146 (EX-MT 6), and 153 (NM 7). While 1939 Play Balls are numbered #1 through 162, no #126 was ever issued, making the set complete at 161 cards. 1939 Play Balls are rarely offered as a complete set. The forty-six high-number cards and the numerous Hall of Famers, in addition to Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, naturally give this set an impressive break value. This mixed-grade set has many highlights including a particularly attractive example of Joe DiMaggio (PSA EX 5) and offers an outstanding value, representing an extremely desirable relatively affordable alternative to a higher-grade set of this classic prewar gum issue. The SMR value for just eight of the nine PSA-graded cards (not including the qualified #92 Ted Williams and not including the additional 152 ungraded cards!) is $1,005. Total: 161 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,666
