1939 to 1941 Play Ball Wrapper Collection (3)

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $948

Outstanding set of three Play Ball gum-card wax wrappers, one from each year, 1939 to 1941. Produced by Gum, Inc., of Philadelphia, Play Ball cards have always been considered among the all-time classic baseball-card sets and are the premier card issues of their era. In the 1960s and early 1970s, Bruce Yeko's Wholesale Cards company offered 1939 Play Ball wrappers in its catalogs. Yeko, who was one of the most legendary of all early baseball-card dealers, somehow secured a quantity of 1939 wrappers, but he had no 1940 or 1941 Play Ball wrappers. This is why the 1939 wrapper is more readily available than 1940 or 1941, both of which are quite rare. Several different color variations exist for both 1940 and 1941 Play Ball wrappers. This collection consists of the following: 1) 1939 R334 Play Ball one-cent wax wrapper. Superb red, white, and blue design commemorating the centennial of baseball and offering "picture cards of leading baseball players and bubble gum." Flattened and in overall Excellent condition with normal fold lines visible. 2) 1940 R335 Play Ball one-cent wax wrapper. Green and white design featuring a generic ballplayer advertising "baseball stars and stories." Flattened and in overall Very Good to Excellent condition with normal fold lines visible and an additional horizontal fold through the middle. 3) 1941 R336 Play Ball one-cent wax wrapper. Rare orange and white version advertising two cards for a penny. Flattened and in overall Very Good to Excellent condition with normal fold lines visible and an additional horizontal fold through the middle. Each wrapper has tremendous display value and presents exceptionally well. Superb companions to complete Play Ball sets or additions to an advertising or wrapper collection. Total: 3 wrappers. Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $948
