1933 R338 Sport Kings #2 Babe Ruth SGC NM/MT 88
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $11,850
Graded NM/MT 88 by SGC. One of only six examples graded at this level with just five higher out of the 157 cards evaluated by SGC to date. Spectacular ultra high-grade example of one of the 1930s most classic cards: the 1933 Sport Kings Babe Ruth. This card is extremely bright and clean both front and back, with just a hint of wear at the tips of the corners and perfect registration. The green text on the reverse is crisp, bold, and also essentially flawless. It is rare to find such a strong example of this classic. This example is encapsulated in a first-generation SGC holder (dating to the early days of the company), and since grading standards have evolved in the many years since then, it cannot be guaranteed that this card would receive the same grade if resubmitted to SGC or PSA. Based on examination in the holder, REA grades this card slightly more conservatively. The SMR in the assigned grade is $27,000. The SMR in NM is $9,650. The Sport King is one of Ruth's most popular and desirable cards, and one of the most famous and majestic cards in the collecting world. The 1933 Sport Kings Ruth is also far rarer than Ruth's 1933 Goudey counterparts, especially in high grade. Being the number-two card in the set, the Sport Kings Ruth tended to gravitate to the top of the stack, exposing it to much more wear than other cards, and thus making high-grade examples far more difficult to find than most Sport Kings and most other 1930s Ruth cards. This is a superb and extremely attractive example of this classic Babe Ruth card. Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $11,850
