1935 R321 Goudey "4-in-1" Complete Master Set (114) Including Four Babe Ruths!
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $11,258
Presented are 114 1935 R321 "4-in-1" Goudey cards representing one of the most extraordinary and difficult-to-complete collecting projects that 1930s gum-card collecting has to offer: a complete master set of 1935 Goudey Gum cards. This is the first master set of this issue we have ever offered!
Extremely attractive mid- to high-grade complete master set of 1935 R321 Goudey "4-in-1" comprised of all 114 front and back combinations within this fascinating set. An incredible seventy-nine cards (69% of the set) feature one or more Hall of Famers, including four cards of the legendary Babe Ruth on his last card as a player (the portrait image of Ruth is a close-up detail from his 1933 Goudey card #181 dugout pose, and because the set was issued in 1935, he is identified on this card as a member of the Boston Braves. Ruth appeared in just 28 games with the Braves in 1935 before retiring as a player). The 1935 Goudey series is one of the company’s most interesting efforts. Each card features four players, and the reverse features puzzle pieces, which can be collected and assembled to form a large baseball picture. Thirty-six different four-player front combinations exist and comprise a basic set. Each front can be found with two to four back combinations, which account for the total of 114 cards in a complete master set.
This set has been consigned by a pioneer collector who did most of his collecting during the 1960s and 1970s and collected with a very keen focus on condition, eye appeal, and (as can be seen here!) completeness. His determined efforts to acquire all possible versions of a card, including the many Hall of Famers which had to be purchased in duplicate, culminated in the assembly of this master set. Condition is 26% Ex-Mt or better, 40% Ex, 17% Vg-Ex, and 17% lesser. We have selected twenty-six cards (23% of the set) to be graded by SGC. In the following condition composite, cards are identified by the numbers provided in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards checklist. Keys: Four #1 Bottomley (Ex, Vg-Ex, Fr, and Pr), four 4 Appling (two EX/NM+ 82 and two Ex), three 5 Averill (two Ex and Pr), three 6 Ott (NM+ 86, EX/NM 80, and VG/EX+ 55), three 9 Vance (Ex+ and two Ex), four 10 Cronin (EX/NM 80, EX+ 70, Ex, and Gd), two 12 Herman (Ex-Mt and Ex), two 13 Lyons (both Ex), four 14 Bottomley (NM 84, EX+ 70, Ex, and Vg-Ex+), four 16 Ruth/Maranville (two EX+ 70, VG/EX+55, and Pr), four 17 Cochrane/Gehringer (NM 84, EX/NM 80, Vg-Ex, and Vg), four 19 Waners/Hoyt (EX/NM 80, Ex, Vg, and Fr), four 22 Dean/Frisch (EX 60, two Gd, and Fr), four 24 Cochrane/Simmons (two EX+ 70, EX 60, and Vg-Ex), four 26 Goslin (NM 84 and three Ex), four 27 Cuyler/Grimes/Klein (Ex, two Vg, and miscut), three 28 Dickey/Lazzeri/Ruffing (two EX 60 and Vg-Ex), two 29 Ferrell (Ex and Vg-Ex+), two 30 Greenberg (EX/NM 80 and Ex+), four 31 Foxx (EX/NM 80, two Vg-Ex, and Pr), four 32 Manush (two Ex and two Vg-Ex), four 34 Jackson/Terry (Ex, two Vg-Ex, and Vg), and three 36 Traynor (NM 84, EX/NM 80, and Ex). As collectors are well aware, 1935 Goudeys are particularly hard to find in high grade. The colored flush-to-the-border design makes them very susceptible to edge and corner wear. This is an extremely attractive and (for this issue) very high-grade complete master set of this classic Goudey issue, which is highlighted by seventy-nine cards featuring Hall of Famers, including four of Babe Ruth’s last card as a player. The equivalent SMR value for just the twenty-six graded cards (factoring in the ten half-grades at the lower whole-grade level and not including the eighty-eight ungraded cards) is $7,065. Total: 114 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $11,258
