1938 R323 Goudey "Heads-Up" SGC-Graded Complete Set (48)

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $13,035

Exceptionally attractive complete set of 1938 Goudey "Heads-Up," one of the most popular of all 1930s issues, highlighted by numerous Hall of Famers, including Joe DiMaggio and Bob Feller. All forty-eight cards are graded and encapsulated by SGC (all submitted by REA). This set has been consigned by a pioneer collector who collected with a very keen focus on condition and eye-appeal. The cards in this set are bright and fresh and many of the modestly graded cards are downgraded due to normal corner and edge wear and have a far better appearance than suggested by their technically accurate SGC grades. This is a beautiful set! SGC Grading Composite: One NM/MT 88: #261. One NM+ 86: #264 Feller (HOF). Two NM 84: #256 and 285. Five EX/NM 80: #245, 252, 259, 271, and 272. Six EX+ 70: #251, 258 Doerr (HOF), 262 Medwick (HOF), 267, 274 DiMaggio (HOF), and 283. Fifteen EX 60: #241 Gehringer (HOF), 248, 253 Greenberg (HOF), 255, 257 Lopez (HOF), 260, 265 Gehringer (HOF), 266, 268, 273 Foxx (HOF), 277 Greenberg (HOF), 281 Lopez (HOF), 282 Doerr (HOF), 287, and 288 Feller (HOF). Five VG/EX+ 55: #246 Lombardi/black baseball (HOF), 254, 269, 270 Lombardi/Reds, and 286 Medwick. Three VG/EX 50: #242, 247, and 249 Foxx. Two VG+ 45: #244 and 250 DiMaggio. Three VG 40: #275, 278, and 284. One GOOD+ 35: #243. Three GOOD 30: #263, 276, and 280. One FAIR 20: #279. This is a very sharp-looking complete set of one of card collecting's most classic issues, highlighted by what are among the most desirable cards (two of each, with and without cartoon backgrounds) of many of the era's key stars, including Joe DiMaggio, Jimmy Foxx, and Bob Feller. The equivalent SMR value in the assigned grades (factoring in the fifteen half-grades at the lower whole-grade level) is $12,709. Total: 48 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$10,000. SOLD FOR $13,035
