1933 R319 Goudey Color-Process Proof-Card Collection (36 Unique Proof Cards)

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $4,148

Presented is a fascinating collection of thirty-six unique color-process proof cards from the legendary R319 Goudey series. This collection contains eighteen pairs representing two stages of production for each of eighteen different cards found within the 1933 Goudey set. One proof is a blue-and-white color-process card, while the second proof card is a near-complete color process with the "Big League Chewing Gum" advertising strip along bottom but missing all black type. As is always the case with color-process proof cards, each has a blank back. This collection consists of the following cards (two proof cards each): #41 Mancuso, 43 Fonseca, 61 Bishop, 62 Martin, 65 Gaston, 66 Grantham, 67 Bush, 94 Walker, 95 Crowder, 143 Wright, 146 Stewart, 150 Kolp, 152 Taylor, 153 Myer, 155 Judge, 157 Byrd, 159 Bluege, and 183 Walberg. Collectors are used to seeing printer's proofs for relatively modern sets, but examples from classic vintage sets such as Goudey are virtually nonexistent. These cards were originally part of two complete 24-card Goudey color-process sheets discovered in the early 1980s, which at that time were professionally cut so that they could be displayed in pairs. Today these pairs rarely surface. This lot represents eighteen of the original twenty-four pairs. The whereabouts of the others is currently unknown to us but they are out there somewhere! This is a tremendous collection of these extraordinary and unique color-process cards, used by Goudey's printer for proofing during the production process for its classic 1933 series. All cards are encapsulated "Authentic" by SGC. Total: 36 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,148
