1922 W573 Babe Ruth

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,370

Graded VG/EX+ 55 by SGC. This is the only example graded at this level with one card higher (EX 60). 1922 W573 Babe Ruth, the key card to this early-1920s strip-card issue. These "strip cards" were issued in vertical strips of ten for a penny. The cards are blank-backed and are very similar in design to the popular E120 American Caramel set. Because the cards were hand-cut from strips, the borders tend to vary in size, which makes numerically graded examples hard to come by. This W573 Ruth example is extraordinary in appearance and has particularly large borders. Outstanding centering and four strong corners, with just some small and very light age spots visible on front. Clean blank reverse. This is an extremely strong and impressive technically mid-grade example which would be a worthy addition to even the most advanced Babe Ruth, Hall of Fame, or prewar-card collection. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,370
