1929 W553 Marble Bubble Gum Novelties Babe Ruth
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $2,015
Graded VG 40 by SGC. Exceptional example of Babe Ruth from the W553 series. Issued by Marble Bubble Gum Novelties as part of a series depicting sports and movie stars, this blue duotone card features an ideal batting pose of Ruth surrounded by an ornate frame. (For many years it was unknown who issued this set. In 2009 it was discovered that W553 is actually a gum card set issued by Marble Bubble Gum Novelties of Philadelphia, and should have really always been catalogued as an "R" issue. Fourteen unopened Marble Bubble Gum packs proving this were part of the extraordinary unopened 1920s and 1930s pack and box find offered at REA in 2009.) A facsimile signature and "New York/American League" are positioned in the lower right corner. The card presents as Excellent from the front with a flawless image, light wear to the corners (most noticeable in the lower right), and near-perfect centering. The blank reverse displays several areas of glue residue, which are responsible for the modest technical grade. This outstanding example of Babe Ruth, the key card to the W553 set, would be a significant addition to any Babe Ruth, prewar, or sample-card collection. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $2,015
