1924 V122 Willard's Chocolates #5 Babe Ruth
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,304
Key card of Babe Ruth from the unusual and VERY scarce 1924 V122 Willard's Chocolates set, professionally graded and encapsulated VG 40 by SGC. This 56-card multisport Canadian candy issue features only three baseball players (Ruth, Cobb, and Collins). These black-and-white cards (1-3/8 x 3-3/8 inches) are printed on thin cardboard stock with blank backs, and feature images that are unique to this set. Babe Ruth is naturally considered the key card and is pictured in an ideal follow-through batting pose. The card identifies Ruth under his name as the "Home Run Champion." The offered example is well centered with a crisp image and even wear to the four corners. Downgraded due to a light horizontal crease (most noticeable on the reverse) in the top third of the card. The blank reverse is otherwise clean. No one will ever confuse V122 Willard's with any other card issue, and the fact that they date from the mid-1920s, an era with very few baseball-card issues, is another important distinction of the set. This is a very attractive example of the key Hall of Famer from one of the most unusual sets of the 1920s. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,304
