1921 E253 Oxford Confectionery Rogers Hornsby

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $711

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Key Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby from the E253 set issued by Oxford Confectionery of Oxford, Pennsylvania. This card has an appearance bordering on Ex-Mt but has been downgraded due to a very faint 3/4-inch crease, visible only under close inspection on the reverse and almost imperceptible on the front. It is otherwise bright and clean with four square corners and a perfectly clean reverse. This is a beautiful card, especially strong for this set. Oxfords are printed on somewhat thin card stock that is particularly prone to wear. Oxford Confectionery issued this unusual set in 1921, at the same time its larger competitors were also issuing baseball cards with caramel treats. Collectors have always appreciated the rarity and primitive charm of this distinctive candy issue, which is of all the more special note as it features photos that are unique to this set. A complete twenty-card checklist appears on the reverse of each card. Oxfords appear to have been regionally issued, as they are rarely found outside of the Pennsylvania area. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $711
