1927 E210 York Caramels #6 Babe Ruth

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,963

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Rare candy card of Babe Ruth from one of the few issues dating from the late 1920s. This is a Type I, differentiated from the Type II variety by the orientation of the reverse text (faces left) and the finish (non-glossy). This is the only Type I graded at this level with just one higher (VG/EX+ 55). Two cards (one VG/EX 50 and one EX+ 70) are not distinguished by type on the SGC Population Report and may be Type I varieties. The card has perfect clarity, light, even wear to the corners (a little more in the lower left), and is free of any creases. The reverse is clean with bold black text. It is interesting to note that Ruth is actually pictured in a Boston Red Sox uniform on this card. The York Caramel Company issued this unusual set in 1927. The set is identical in design to Tharp's Ice Cream, Sweetman, and W502, but with advertising for the "York Caramel Co." of York, Pennsylvania, on the reverse. Collectors have always appreciated the rarity and primitive charm of this distinctive candy issue. York Caramels appear to have been regionally issued, as they are rarely found outside of the Pennsylvania area. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,963
