1887 N184 W. S. Kimball Champions SGC-Graded Near-Complete Set (47/50)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,851
Near-complete set of forty-seven cards (out of fifty) from the N184 W. S. Kimball Champions highlighted by the inclusion of three of the four baseball players featured in the set. Missing only McLaughlin, O'Neill (baseball), and Oakley for completion. Every card in this set is graded and encapsulated by SGC (except for one PSA and one ungraded). Kimballs are considered by many to be one of the most beautiful of all the nineteenth-century tobacco issues. The set features champions and stars of the day from a wide variety of sports. Although the baseball players featured in the set are not Hall of Famers, each was a very popular star at the time. SGC Grading Composite: EX 60 (1 card): Cockburn. VG/EX 50 (4 cards): McPherson, Meyers, Paulsen, and Wood. VG 40 (16 cards): Blondin, Darling (baseball, PSA VG 3), Ferrell, W. G. George, Hamilton, Hanlan, Jordan, Kane, Muldoon, Muller, J. Murphy, Rowe, Schloss, Wallace, Webb, and Wessels. GOOD 30 (9 cards): Burch (baseball), Freeman, L. George, Heins, Morsler, Perry, Ross, Schaefer, and J. Smith. FAIR 20 (13 cards): Blatt, Beardsley, Casey, Dempsey, Henderson (baseball), Humphrey, I. Murphy, O'Leary, Page, L. Smith, Stewart, Sullivan, and Warren. POOR 10 (3 cards): Beach, Boynton, and Cardiff. Ungraded (1 card): Whistler (Gd). This is an extremely attractive set with even the lesser-graded examples presenting at a level far superior to their technically accurate assigned grades. This is a beautiful and rarely offered complete set (minus just three cards) of N184 Kimball "Champions," one of the most highly regarded and classic of all nineteenth-century tobacco issues. Total: 47 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,851
