1923 W572 Strip-Card Collection (20) Including Babe Ruth and Two Ty Cobb

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,778

This 1923 W572 strip-card collection, which features fifteen individual cards (eleven different) plus an additional five cards in an uncut strip (as issued), is highlighted by eight Hall of Famers, including Babe Ruth, two Ty Cobbs, and two Walter Johnsons. The 1923 W572 series is one of the most substantial and overlooked sets from the 1920s. Very few comprehensive baseball-card sets featuring 100+ players were issued in the early 1920s, and this is one of the few. This classic 1920-era strip-card issue includes many of the great stars and Hall of Famers of the decade. These cards were originally issued in ten-card strips and are often found with irregularly cut borders as they were cut by hand from the strips as intended. We have selected three cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. This collection consists of the following: Two Cobb (HOF, one Authentic), J. Collins, two R. Grimes, two Johnson (HOF, one EX 60), Mostil, Pipp, Ruth (HOF, Authentic), Schalk (HOF), two Severeid, Ea. Smith, and J. Smith. The players on the uncut strip are Johnston, O'Neill, K. Williams, Hornsby (HOF), and Frisch (HOF). The individual cards have survived in outstanding condition and present in Excellent or better condition without respect to the cutting issues, which may, as is the case with two of the three encapsulated cards, cause them only to qualify for an "Authentic" designation. Two cards (Johnson and J. Smith) have wrinkles or creasing visible. The uncut strip is in Ex-Mt condition. While this is a relatively small collection of cards, it contains several notable highlights (including Babe Ruth and two Ty Cobbs) and is an outstanding representation from this classic strip-card issue. Total: 20 cards (15 individual cards and 1 uncut strip of 5 cards).Reserve $200. Estimate $500++. SOLD FOR $1,778
