1923 W572 Babe Ruth SGC NM 84 - 1 of 1 - Highest Graded!

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $5,333

Graded NM 84 by SGC (submitted by REA). Incredible ultra high-grade example of Babe Ruth from the W572 strip-card series. This is the highest-graded example ever evaluated by SGC out of a total of nineteen W572 Babe Ruth examples submitted to date (nine of which are graded "Authentic"). The 1923 W572 series is one of the most substantial and overlooked sets from the 1920s. Very few comprehensive baseball-card sets featuring 100+ players were issued in the early 1920s, and W572 is one of the few. This classic 1920-era strip-card issue includes many of the great stars and Hall of Famers of the decade. These cards were originally issued in ten-card strips and are often found with irregularly cut borders as they were cut by hand from the strips as intended. Discovering any surviving example in Near Mint condition is rare and having that example be Babe Ruth, the key card to this set, is unprecedented. The next highest SGC-graded example is Ex. (The highest PSA-graded example is also EX). This remarkable Near Mint example was found by REA in an old-time original-owner collection of strip-cards consigned to auction that had remained undisturbed since the 1920s! It practically jumped out of the collection (which spanned all grades) as a remarkable find. The card displays virtually perfect centering, a crisp image, and four strong corners. The blank reverse is entirely clean. This is a stunning example of one of Babe Ruth's most classic 1920s strip-cards and one that would be a highlight addition to any Babe Ruth, strip-card, or prewar-card collection. Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,333
