1922 Exhibit Supply Company Near-Complete Set (68/74)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,370
Extremely attractive near-complete set of sixty-eight cards (of the seventy-four in the set) from the 1922 Exhibits series. The 1922 Exhibit set has few Hall of Famers, but more than makes up for this as a very special set in the eyes of advanced collectors by featuring many subjects that appear in few other sets, often with images that are unique to this set. Also of special note is its extremely unusual subset of umpires (George Moriarty, Bill Klem, Rigler, Evans, and Hildebrand). Missing only six cards for completion (Bohne, Peckinpaugh, Robertson, Scott, Cu. Walker, and Wood). The 1922 Exhibits (3-3/8 x 5-3/8 inches) have a black-and-white image, some of which are framed with white borders, and are blank-backed. Condition: 31% Ex (including a few better), 43% Vg-Ex to Ex, and 26% lesser. Many of the lower-graded cards are downgraded simply for writing (pencil or ink) on the reverses. Keys: Baker (Vg-Ex), Evans/umpire (Ex), Heilmann (Vg), Hildebrand/umpire (writing on front and back, otherwise Vg), Klem/umpire (Ex), Moriarity/umpire (Vg-Ex), Rigler/umpire (Vg-Ex), Rixey (Ex), Yellowhorse (Vg-Ex), and Youngs (Gd). Consigned from an old-time collection. This is a very attractive near set (missing just six cards for completion) of these rare Exhibits from the early 1920s. Exhibits are extremely substantial, far rarer than many other cards from the era, and represent an extraordinary collecting value for quality cards from the 1920s. Total: 68 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $2,370
