1919 T213 Coupon Cigarettes Christy Mathewson (Type 3) - Highest Graded!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,110

Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. One of only two examples graded at this level with none higher. Stunning ultra high-grade example of this fascinating Mathewson rarity from the T213 (Type 3) series. Bright and crisp, with brilliant colors, four sharp corners, and centered slightly to the right border (which is not uncommon with this issue due to the cards' very narrow borders). Approximately twenty years ago, there was an amazing high-grade find of T213-3 Coupons, all in Nr/Mt (or better) condition. Most (if not all) super high-grade examples originate from this legendary find, and we would be surprised if this gem did not also. This card is absolutely gorgeous. One of the curious anomalies of the card-collecting world is that this card is literally hundreds of times rarer than the T206 Mathewson of the same pose, but according to guides is actually valued at a discount to a T206 Matty. The market's fickle nature is the advanced and rare-card collector's gain in this case. T213 (Type 3) is a very interesting issue. Similar in design and borrowing the same images as T206, the T213 (Type 3) Coupon set was issued exclusively in the Louisiana area, and was the very last of the traditional tobacco-card sets. The set was issued in 1919. T213 (Type 3) Coupons are far rarer than their T206 counterparts, and one of tobacco-card collecting's most overlooked issues. This stunning ultra high-grade example of a significant and particularly rare Christy Mathewson card would be a significant addition to any Hall of Fame, sample, or rare vintage baseball-card collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $7,110
