1920-1921 W514 Complete Set Minus One (119/120)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,036

Presented is an extremely attractive complete set (minus one card) of W514 strip cards. Missing only #1 Flagstead for completion and missing the four known variations, #21b Maranville (Pirates), 40b Bancroft (Giants), 47b Roth (Yankees), and 106b Jennings (Giants) that are included in a totally complete master set of 124 cards. The W514 set is the largest and most widely collected of the various strip-card issues of the era. This complete set minus one of W514 strip cards includes an incredible twenty-seven Hall of Famers plus seven of the eight Chicago "Black Sox," who were banned from baseball for their alleged role in throwing the 1919 World Series. The set is highlighted by "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, his only strip-card appearance. We have selected four cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: #2 Babe Ruth (Pr), 3 Felsch (Vg), 15 Joe Jackson ("Authentic" due to irregular cut, otherwise Ex), 16 Southworth (Gd), 21a Maranville - Braves (Vg), 22 Carey (Vg-Ex), 25 Collins (Vg), 31 Gandil (EX 60), 34 Huggins (Vg-Ex), 35 L. Williams (Vg), 40a Bancroft - Quakers (Vg), 41 Griffith (Vg-Ex), 43 Ty Cobb (Vg-Ex), 52 McGraw (Ex), 56 Hornsby (Ex), 60 Schalk (Ex), 62 Lajoie (Vg-Ex), 64 Hooper (Vg-Ex), 65 Alexander (Vg), 69 Faber (Vg-Ex), 72 Mathewson (Vg-Ex), 75 Baker (Vg-Ex), 79 Rice (Vg-Ex), 82 Cicotte (Vg), 85 Roush (Vg-Ex), 91 Weaver (EX 60), 94 W. Johnson (Vg), 95 Crawford (Vg-Ex), 101 Sisler (Vg-Ex), 102 Speaker (Vg), 105 Risberg ("Authentic" due to irregular cut, otherwise Vg-Ex), 106a Jennings - Tigers (no borders, otherwise Gd), 110 Wheat (Vg), 113 Stengel (Ex), and 114 Chase (Vg-Ex). The ungraded balance ranges from Vg to Ex (with a few lesser). Strip cards, of course, are by definition hand-cut, as intended, and are therefore often encapsulated by the third-party grading companies as "Authentic" even if they appear high grade, due to the cuts affecting a small portion of the cutting guide lines. REA grades strip cards slightly differently than the grading companies do. The grades we have provided above do not downgrade the cards for extremely minor cutting flaws which are natural to strip cards. If submitted to PSA or SGC, it is probable that many of these cards would only grade "Authentic." This is a beautiful set! The cards in this set are all bright, clean, and 90% are free of creases or wrinkles. Considering their fragile nature, the condition of this set is remarkable. This classic 1920s issue represents one of the most outstanding values in vintage-card collecting and is one of the most important and comprehensive sets of the era. Total: 119 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000++. SOLD FOR $5,036
