1916 M101-5 Sporting News #90 Walter Johnson SGC NM 84 - Highest Graded!
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,555
Graded NM 84 by SGC. Highest-graded example by SGC with only one other at this level! Hands-above-head pose of Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson from the M101-5 Sporting News series. The 1916 M101-5 set is one of the most highly regarded and comprehensive baseball-card sets of the era. The set is commonly referred to as issued by the Sporting News, but, as most collectors know, the set was actually issued by several different companies. Cards were printed with advertising for regional issuers as well as with blank banks. The offered card has a blank back. The M101-5 Sporting News set is universally recognized as one of the most significant of all prewar baseball-card issues. Perfectly clean, both front and back, with four sharp corners, a bright and crisp image, and outstanding centering (slightly to the bottom). This is an extraordinary high-grade card that would be a significant addition to any Walter Johnson or prewar Hall of Fame card collection. The equivalent SMR value in the assigned grade is $3,500. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $3,555
