1916 M101-5 Sporting News SGC-Graded Collection (41)
Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $5,333
Collection of forty-one different cards from the M101-5 Sporting News set, including Hall of Famers Nap Lajoie and Connie Mack as well as many notable condition highlights. Each card in this collection is professionally graded and encapsulated by SGC (all submitted by REA), with twenty-nine of the forty-one cards grading NM, NM+, or NM-MT. The offered collection represents twenty percent of a complete 1916 M101-5 Sporting News set. The M101-5s, along with the very closely related M101-4 set, are two of the most highly regarded and comprehensive baseball-card sets of the era. This is an extremely attractive group of cards with flawless real-photo images, all of which were purchased in the 1980s and 1990s by our consignor (in the days before professional grading) and at that time were described as NM or NM-MT. While most of the cards in this collection have lived up to their billing as NM or MM-MT by today's professional grading standards, some have been been downgraded due to minor technical flaws while still presenting (as can easily be seen) at a level superior to their assigned grades. This is a sharp-looking group! The collection consists of the following: NM/MT 88 (2 cards): #58 (1 of 1, highest graded) and 79 (1 of 1, highest graded). NM+ 86 (8 cards): #18, 36, 46, 91, 99, 104, 127, and 174. All are 1 of 1, highest-graded examples. NM 84 (19 cards): #14, 47, 50, 51, 59, 77, 80, 84, 88, 93, 94, 108, 154, 168, 172, 175, 189, 190, and 191. All are 1 of 1, highest-graded examples except for #168 and 191 (each pop 2) and #88 (one higher). EX/NM 80 (3 cards): #87, 95 Lajoie (HOF), and 194. All 1 of 1, highest-graded examples. EX+ 70 (7 cards): #19, 23a, 74, 75, 103, 127, and 133. VG/EX+ 55 (1 card): #97a. VG+ 45 (1 card): #105 Mack (HOF). All cards are blank-backed, and the population data quoted reflects this, as some examples may have a higher-graded advertising-back example on record. This is an outstanding collection, containing numerous highlights, that could serve as a significant foundation to the assembly of a complete set, or provide upgrades to virtually any set or collection of these classic prewar cards. The equivalent SMR value (factoring in the seventeen half grades at the lower whole-grade level) is $6,065. Total: 41 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $5,333
