1916 M101-4 Sporting News SGC-Graded Collection (53)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,259

Collection of fifty-two different cards (plus one duplicate) from the M101-4 Sporting News set highlighted by Hall of Famers Nap Lajoie and Eppa Rixey. Each card in this collection is professionally graded and encapsulated by SGC (all submitted by REA). The offered collection represents twenty-five percent of a complete 1916 M101-4 Sporting News set! The M101-4s, along with the very closely related M101-5 set, are two of the most highly regarded and comprehensive baseball-card sets of the era. This is an extremely attractive group of cards with flawless real-photo images, all of which were purchased in the 1980s and 1990s by our consignor (in the days before professional grading) and at that time were described as NM or NM-MT. While a few cards in this collection have lived up to their billing as NM or MM-MT by today's professional grading standards, the majority have been downgraded due to minor technical flaws while still presenting at a level superior to their assigned grades. The collection consists of the following: NM/MT 88 (1 card): #65 (1 of 1, highest graded). NM+ 86 (1 card): #152 (1 of 1, highest graded). NM 84 (2 cards): #67 (highest graded) and 142 Rixey (HOF, 1 of 1, highest graded). EX/NM+ 82 (1 card): #65. EX/NM 80 (2 cards): #61 and 66 (1 of 1, highest graded). EX+ 70 (5 cards): Two #7, 48, 168, and 170. EX 60 (13 cards): #22, 24, 52, 53, 59, 66, 77, 97 Lajoie (HOF), 104, 126, 135, 157, and 187. VG/EX+ 55 (7 cards): #3, 50, 89, 92, 111, 133, and 198. VG/EX 50 (2 cards): #27 and 51. VG+ 45 (5 cards): #40, 49, 58, 60, and 185. VG 40 (3 cards): #132, 171, and 178. GOOD+ 35 (2 cards): #46 and 82. GOOD 30 (3 cards): #31, 69, and 109. FAIR 20 (4 cards): #15, 25, 67, and 81. POOR 10 (1 card): #78. Authentic (1 card): #74. All cards are blank-backed, and the population data quoted reflects this, as some examples may have a higher-graded advertising-back example on record. This is an extremely attractive collection and represents a tremendous foundation to the assembly of a complete set of these classic prewar cards. The equivalent SMR value (factoring in the twenty-five half grades at the lower whole-grade level and excluding the one card graded Authentic) is $3,083. Total: 53 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $3,259
