1917 H801-8 Boston Store #80 Rogers Hornsby Rookie Card SGC EX/NM 80 - 1 of 1 - Highest Graded!

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $17,775

Graded EX/NM 80 by SGC (submitted by REA). Presented is an extremely attractive ultra high-grade H801-8 Boston Store rookie card of legendary Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby in a throwing pose. This is Rogers Hornsby's most desirable card and it is very rarely offered, especially in such outstanding condition. This is the ONLY example graded at this level by SGC, and it is the highest-graded example on record between the combined Population Reports of SGC and PSA (there is a PSA EX-MT 6 with qualifier). The image featured on this card is a unique throwing pose of Hornsby which appears only in the Boston Store set (and related issues). The 1917 Boston Store cards are extremely difficult to find in high grade. Like their E135 Collins-McCarthy counterparts, Boston Store cards are rarely offered in any condition. Unlike the somewhat similar Sporting News card set, these cards were never issued as complete sets to the public. They were also produced on a slightly thinner stock that is far more susceptible to wear, and with a very glossy surface, which is very prone to creasing. Boston Store cards are usually encountered one card at a time and in low grade. Decades ago a perfect set of Boston Store cards surfaced, and judging from the incredible condition of the offered card, it is very possible that this example originated from that legendary high-grade set. This striking example of Hornsby’s rookie card is perfectly bright and clean, with a virtually flawless surface, outstanding contrast, four square corners (a hint of light wear in the top two), and centered to the right. The reverse is also perfectly clean with a boldly printed advertisement. This is a magnificent example of the most significant of all Rogers Hornsby cards, his rookie card, which is of all the greater note as it is a rare card from a top-quality set that dates from the late teens, a time during which very few card sets were issued. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $17,775
