1915 E145 Cracker Jack #68 Honus Wagner

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $8,888

Graded EX 5 by PSA (submitted by REA). The 1915 Cracker Jack is understandably one of Honus Wagner's most striking and popular cards. This is a magnificent example, extremely attractive, and obviously from a "factory set," virtually untouched by human hands. Cards from this series were available direct from Cracker Jack by mail in 1915 in a complete "factory set" while individual Cracker Jack cards were also packaged with each box. Cards issued in boxes tend to have various condition problems, including caramel staining. The "Flying Dutchman" is one of the big three key cards in the set, along with Ty Cobb and Joe Jackson. This card is well centered, with outstanding color, perfect registration, an extremely bold red background, and virtually flawless square corners. Clean, boldly printed reverse. This card shares many characteristics with a card grading NM or NM-MT but has been appropriately downgraded due to the slightest hint of darkening on the right and left borders and a light stain on the top border (a hint of red apparently from the red background). While not traditional caramel staining, these flaws likely originate from storage in a slightly damp area sometime during the past century. The border flaws are not particularly distracting but obviously must be taken into account during the grading process. The card certainly has a superior appearance to its assigned grade, and would be a welcome addition to any high-grade collection of Cracker Jack, Honus Wagner, or Hall of Fame cards. An exceptionally attractive example of one of prewar-card collecting's most popular and classic cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $8,888
