1914 WG4 Polo Grounds Game Near-Complete Set (44/54) Including 21 Hall of Famers and Joe Jackson

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,252

Presented is an extremely attractive near-complete 1914 Polo Ground game-card set consisting of forty-four cards. When issued, the game included a total of fifty-four cards representing thirty different players plus twenty-four duplicates along with an instruction manual. Twenty-eight of the thirty different players are represented in the offered assembly, missing only Jennings and Meyers for a complete set of all different players in the series. Armed with the instructions, youngsters could use the cards to play an exciting game of indoor baseball. This game-card set is referred to as “The Polo Grounds” game because the back of each card features a green-and-white photograph of a game in action at the Polo Grounds. The set was produced by The Card Baseball Co., Inc., of Norfolk, Virginia. They named the set "All Star Card Baseball" and the box that housed these cards promised that the game is "Exciting! Interesting! Thrilling!" and "The Hit of the Season!" The near-complete set of forty-four cards includes duplicates (as issued) of several key stars (two cards of Honus Wagner, two Ty Cobb, two Christy Mathewson, etc.). The fronts have a sepia player photo plus a baseball “play” to determine the result of the player’s action. This classic issue features many of the greatest stars of the day, including Joe Jackson, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, and an additional eleven Hall of Famers. (Counting duplicates, the forty-four cards offered here include an incredible total of twenty-one Hall of Famers plus Joe Jackson, in addition to non-HOF stars such as Joe Wood.) We have selected three cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. Keys: Baker (Vg+), Chance (Vg+), two Cobb (Ex and VG/EX 50), two Collins (both Ex), Joe Jackson (EX 60), Lajoie (Ex), Maranville (Vg-Ex+), three Marquard (two Ex and Vg-Ex+), two Mathewson (NM 84 and Ex), McGraw (Ex), two Plank (Ex and Vg-Ex), two Speaker (Ex and Fr, ink on reverse otherwise Ex), two Wagner (both Fr due to ink), and Walsh (Ex). The balance of the cards grade Ex to Ex-Mt with six lesser. All are clean with crisp images but have light wear to the rounded corners and edges which causes them to grade more modestly. This outstanding near-complete set would make a worthy addition to any prewar card or Hall of Fame collection. This set has always been of great interest to collectors due to the high concentration of stars and Hall of Famers. The equivalent SMR value for just the three graded cards is $580. Total: 44 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,252
