1909 T212 Obak Complete Set (76)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,740

Rarely offered complete set of seventy-six 1909 T212 Obak cards, including "Black Sox" member Chick Gandil. Obaks are among the most popular of all early card issues featuring players from the Pacific Coast League. While catalogued simply as T212, Obaks were actually issued over a period of three years, from 1909 to 1911, and are really three sets. The 76-card 1909 set is the first of the three annual T212 baseball cards from Obak Cigarettes. The 1909 set cards are by far the rarest of the three Obak sets and are easily distinguished by the blue printing on their backs in an “Old English” font. Forty-five cards are professionally graded and encapsulated (twenty-six SGC, eighteen PSA, and one GAI). Many 1909 Obaks were obviously hand-cut at the factory and were issued exactly in this manner; several cards are encapsulated as "Authentic" due to their very slight irregular cut but are definitely not trimmed. All cards in the following condition report are SGC-graded unless noted otherwise. Condition Report: EX+ 70 (1 card): Brown. VG 40 (4 cards): Flannagan, McKune, Smith, and Williams. GOOD 30 (8 cards): Beall, Fansing, Graney, Guyn (PSA GOOD 2 [MK]), Haley, Melchoir, Nelson, and Zeider. FAIR 20 (7 cards): Easterly, Ehman, Hogan, Howard, Ragan, Raymer, and Wheeler. POOR 10 (15 cards): Berry (PSA PR 1), Bodie (PSA PR 1), Brackenridge, Breen (PSA PR 1), Brown, Browning, Delmas (PSA PR 1), Eagan (GAI PR 1), Fisher (PSA PR 1), Harkins (PSA PR 1 [MK]), Hogan (PSA PR 1), La Longe (PSA PR 1), Lewis (PSA PR 1), Murphy, and Ryan (PSA PR 1 [MK]). Authentic (10 cards): Cameron (PSA), Coy, Fitzgerald, Lewis (PSA), McCredie (PSA), Mott (PSA), Olson (PSA), Shinn (PSA), Tennant, and Williams (PSA). The thirty-one ungraded cards, including Gandil, would all grade Poor or Authentic, due to various technical faults or as-issued hand-cut edges. This is an outstanding set. 1909 T212 Obak cards are rarely offered as complete sets, and are highly prized by both minor-league collectors and tobacco-card collectors. Total: 76 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++. SOLD FOR $4,740
