1912 S81 Large Silk Premium #102 Ty Cobb - NR/MT-MT!!!

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $11,258

Stunning ultra high-grade example of legendary Hall of Famer Ty Cobb from the 1912 S81 Large Silk tobacco-premium issue from a remarkable find. When we opened the package and saw the condition of this gem, we practically had a heart attack! This is by far the best S81 Ty Cobb we have ever seen, and there is no doubt it looked exactly like this when it was produced in 1912. We're not even sure if this silk was actually redeemed as a premium. It is very possible that it was just put aside or given away by the silk manufacturer or someone involved with the tobacco company. Judging by the condition, we think that one of these two possibilities is very likely. This example is entirely new to the hobby and has been consigned by a noncollector in the New England area who found this silk (along with Lajoie, Speaker, Jennings, and the S81 generals and flag silks also offered in this auction) many years ago and has kept them in his possession until now. The S81 Ty Cobb, of course, is the key highlight from this remarkable find. The S81 silks could only be obtained by mail, in exchange for twenty Helmar Tobacco gift coupons per silk. The redeemable coupons were inserted one coupon per pack, so it is not surprising that these premiums are extremely rare. Ty Cobb is the key Hall of Famer in the set, which includes just twenty-five subjects, and this is one of the rarest and most desirable of all Ty Cobb tobacco issues. The illustration of Cobb used in the S81 premium silk set is identical to that used in the T3 Turkey Red set and the rare L1 Leather set, all of which were part of this same promotion. This is a stunningly beautiful example! It has a flawless image area with extremely bold, bright colors, perfect registration, and virtually perfect centering. Some very slight fraying at the top and bottom is present, as is almost always the case with large silks. Overall Near Mint to Mint condition. Also accompanying the silk are the original paper backing and thin wax-paper overlay as issued! This is a most extraordinary and simply magnificent example of Ty Cobb, perhaps the finest in existence, from one of the rarest and most classic of all 1910-era tobacco-premium issues. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $11,258
