1910 S74 "Colored" Tobacco Silks Collection (44) Including Ty Cobb and Christy Mathewson

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,252

Collection of forty-four 1910 S74 "Colored" Tobacco Silks, including six Hall of Famers, highlighted by Ty Cobb and Christy Mathewson. It is fascinating to note that this is an original-owner collection that has been saved in the same family since 1910! The forty-four baseball silks have been separated from a much larger collection of 1910-era tobacco silks including Indians, actresses, and various other nonsport subjects. (The balance of the collection appears elsewhere in this auction as its own lot.) All of the silks have very slight natural fraying to the edges (which is standard for this series). The colored silks all have the factory number along the top (with the exception of Ty Cobb) and the cigarette manufacturer (Turkey Red) along the bottom. The collection grades Excellent overall. This collection consists of the following (quantities in parentheses): Archer (2), Barger, Bescher (2), Bresnahan (HOF), Brown (HOF), Cobb (HOF), Delahanty, Elberfeld, Evans, Evers (HOF), Ewing, Fletcher, Griffith (HOF), Knight, Leach (2), Mathewson (HOF), Merkle, Mullin (2), Needham, Oakes (3), Payne, Pelty (4), Phillippe, Quinn, Rowan (2), Scanlan, Schulte, Smith (2), Stahl, Steinfeldt, Street (2), and Wilson. By any measure, S74s represent one of the very best values of all 1910-era baseball tobacco issues. This is a very attractive collection (that has not seen the light of day since 1910!) of these colorful tobacco premiums, highlighted by Ty Cobb and Christy Mathewson, two of the keys to the set. Total: 44 silks. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,252
