1910 S74 "White" Tobacco Silks SGC-Graded Near-Complete Set Including Ty Cobb (77/92) - 72 with Ad Backs!

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $7,703

Rarely offered near-complete set of seventy-seven different (out of 92) 1910 S74 "White" Tobacco Silks, seventy-two of which have the original advertising backs on reverse intact, including thirteen Hall of Famers, highlighted by Ty Cobb and Christy Mathewson. This is the largest collection of S74s with advertising reverses intact that we have ever seen! S74 silks are related to the T205 Gold Border series, and share the same basic player designs. This near-set is missing just fifteen silks for completion: Barry, Collins, Criger, Dygert, Graham (Cubs), Hartsel, Leach, Murphy, Raymond, Scanlan, Schaefer, H. Smith, Speaker, Steinfeldt (Rustlers), and Wallace. S74 "White" silks are very rarely seen in near-set form. All of the silks have either Old Mill, Red Sun (only one), or Turkey Red Cigarettes paper backing attached to the reverse as originally issued (usually these advertising backs are missing). Each silk in this collection has been graded and encapsulated by SGC. SGC Grading Composite: Five EX 60: Elberfeld, Meyers, Schulte, Titus, and White. Nine VG/EX+ 55: Bresnahan (HOF, Turkey Red), Clarke (HOF, Turkey Red), Evers (HOF, Turkey Red), McIntire, Payne, Quinn, Stone, Tannehill, and Willett. Twenty-four VG/EX 50: Bates, Becker, Bell, Bridwell, Chance (HOF, Turkey Red), Chase, Dooin, Doolan, Ewing, Fletcher, Flynn, Hemphill, Mattern, McGraw (HOF, Turkey Red), Merkle, Murray, Pelty, Reulbach, Shean, Street, Summers, Tinker (HOF, Turkey Red), Turner, and Wilson. Thirteen VG+ 45: Beck, Bender (HOF, Turkey Red), Devlin, Gibson, Graham (Rustlers), Hauser, Marquard (HOF, Turkey Red), Miller, Overall, Parent, Phillippe, Smith, and Wolter. Twelve VG 40: Barger, Brown (HOF, Turkey Red), Cobb (HOF, Turkey Red), Delahanty, Doyle, Evans, Foxen, Griffith (HOF, Old Mill), Jones, Knight, Schlei, and Snodgrass. Three GOOD+ 35: Byrne, Camnitz, and Konetchy. Three GOOD 30: Oakes (Red Sun back), Oldring, and Steinfeldt. Eight Authentic: Baker (HOF, no backing), Carrigan, Crandall, Krause, Mathewson (HOF, Old Mill), McConnell, Needham, and Sheckard. This is an incredible collection that cannot be done justice by the SGC-assigned grades. Each silk is bright and crisp with the slightest hints of fraying, which comes with the territory with tobacco silks. This collection is loaded with highlights, and just a few silks are needed to complete this world-class set. By any measure, S74s represent one of the very best values of all 1910-era baseball tobacco issues. This is a remarkable collection of these tobacco premiums in their most ideal form (seventy-two with ad backs intact), including many key stars, and highlighted by a very attractive example of key silk Ty Cobb. Total: 77 silks. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $7,703
