1912 T207 Brown Background SGC-Graded Collection (95 Different) Including Ten Hall of Famers

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $8,888

Collection of ninety-five different (out of 200 in the set) T207 Brown Background cards, highlighted by ten Hall of Famers (of thirteen in the set), including Walter Johnson, Tris Speaker, and Joe Tinker, as well as an attractive example of one of the rarest cards in the set, Vic Saier. Each card in this collection is graded by SGC (all submitted by REA except for seven EX 60s and the Saier card). This collection has been consigned by a longtime advanced collector who purchased all these cards in the 1980s and 1990s, before the prominence of professional grading, with many of the cards described as Nr/Mt at the time. All cards feature a Recruit Little Cigars advertisement except for three Cycle, two Napoleon, one Broad Leaf, and one "Anonymous." SGC Grading Composite: EX/NM 80 (3 cards): Clarke (Napoleon advertising reverse), Simon, and Snodgrass. EX+ 70 (2 cards): Crandall and Williams. EX 60 (25 cards): Austin/no insignia, Bender (HOF), Bescher, Bresnahan (HOF), Byrne, Cole, Coulson, Daubert, Delahanty, Dooin, Evans, Hallinan, Henriksen, Konetchy, Marquard (HOF), McKechnie (HOF), Mitchell, Moran, C. Morgan, O'Toole, Phelan (Cycle), Stanage, Vaughn (Napoleon), Wilie, and Wolverton. VG/EX+ 55 (15 cards): Ball, Becker, Callahan, Covington, Erwin, Harmon, Johnson (HOF), Knetzer, Lapp, Latham, B. Lord, McBride, Nunamaker, Schaefer, and Wiltse. VG/EX 50 (8 cards): Davis/brown, Devore, Fisher/blue cap, Hooper (HOF), Milan, R. Morgan, Saier (Broad Leaf), and Strunk. VG+ 45 (2 cards): Daniels and Tinker (HOF). VG 40 (9 cards): Chalmers, Derrick, Devlin, Gainor, Gardner, Henry, McLean, J. Miller, and Olson. GOOD+ 35 (1 card): Hogan. GOOD 30 (2 cards): W. Smith and Turner. FAIR 20 (1 card): Speaker (HOF). Authentic (27 cards): Ainsmith, Almeida (anonymous advertising reverse), Barger, Barry, Blackburne (Cycle), Block, Bradley, Doyle, Drake, Fletcher, Hageman, Kirke (Cycle), Knabe, Leifield, Lively, McDonald, McGraw (HOF), McIntire, Needham, Paskart, Schulte, Stack, Steinfeldt, Tannehill, Walker, Wheat (HOF), and Yerkes. This is a particularly strong assembly in terms of condition, especially for T207s, which are so prone to surface cracking and creasing. Almost all of the modestly-graded examples have an appearance far superior to their technically accurate assigned grades. This is a tremendous collection containing many highlights, including ten Hall of Famers (McKechnie and Speaker, in particular, are very scarce) and several additional rarities (Saier, Phelan, Almeida, Kirke, and Blackburne), which would serve as an outstanding foundation for the assembly of an extremely attractive complete set of this classic tobacco-card issue. The equivalent SMR value for just the sixty-eight numerically-graded cards (factoring in the twenty-two half grades at the lower whole-grade level and excluding the twenty-seven cards graded "Authentic") is $10,630. Total: 95 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $8,888
