1909-1911 T205 and T206 Collection (85) Including 35 Hall of Famers

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,555

Collection of eight-one different cards (plus four duplicates for a total of eighty-five cards) from the T205 Gold Border and T206 White Border sets, including thirty-five Hall of Famers! Highlights among the Hall of Famers include Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, and Tris Speaker. The collection consists of eighteen T205s and sixty-seven T206s. In addition to having a remarkably high percentage of Hall of Famers, this is a particularly interesting group in terms of condition as all the cards were part of an original scrapbook that has been carefully disassembled, leaving the scrapbook paper affixed to each reverse. The fronts of the cards vary in grade, with thirty-one cards presenting as Gd to Vg and the rest lesser. Presumably, the scrapbook paper that remains on the back of each card could be carefully removed (and with luck could possibly yield rare advertising backs that would render the technical grades of those cards inconsequential). The key cards listed below grade Pr unless otherwise noted. Keys: T205: Brown, Collins/mouth closed, McGraw, and two Speaker. T206: Baker (Gd), Bender/port., Bender/no trees, Bresnahan/bat (Vg), two Brown/Chicago (both Vg), Brown/Cubs, Brown/port. (Gd+), Chance/batting (Vg), Chase/dark cap (Vg), Chase/holding trophy (Gd), Chase/port. (Vg), Chase/white cap, Clarke/bat (Vg), Clarke/port., Crawford/batting, Davis (Vg), Duffy (Vg), two Evers/with bat Chicago (both Vg), Johnson/hands at chest (Vg), Keeler/bat (Gd), Marquard/hands at side, Mathewson/dark cap (Vg), Mathewson/white cap, McGraw/finger in air (Gd), McGraw/port. no cap, McGraw/port. with cap, Tinker/hands on knees (Vg), Tinker/bat off, Tinker/bat on (Vg), Willis/throwing, and two Willis/bat (Vg and Gd). This lot is ideal for the collector who wants real, original circa 1910 tobacco cards which capture the spirit of the history of the game and collecting, but does not want to spend a fortune. We very much enjoy offering low-grade groups like these when we have the opportunity because they make the collecting of the most classic baseball-card issues possible and more accessible to a wider audience. The cards in this lot represent a remarkable opportunity to acquire a substantial, yet relatively affordable, collection of tobacco cards with numerous highlights. Total: 85 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,555
