1909-1911 T206 Hooks Wiltse Portrait with Cap - Rare Brown Lenox Back!

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $8,295

Presented here is one of the "holy grails" of T206 advertising-back collecting - an extremely rare Brown Lenox reverse. Ranked by as the third most difficult back (out of thirty-nine different advertising backs), the Brown Lenox ranks behind only the Brown Old Mill (available only on Southern Leaguers and only a handful of which have been confirmed) and the Ty Cobb Tobacco (available only on Cobb/red portrait and approximately thirteen of which are known to exist). The offered example of Hooks Wiltse (portrait, with cap) grades VG 3 by PSA. Bright and crisp with bold colors, perfect centering, even wear to the four corners, and light wrinkling at the bottom. Boldly printed reverse. A total of nine Brown Lenox examples have been graded by SGC and PSA combined, with an unknown number of examples not distinguished as brown in their population reports. As suggested by the SGC and PSA population reports, the Brown Lenox cards are supreme rarities. This is an outstanding example of this tremendous advertising-back rarity and one that would make a worthy addition to any T206 back collection. Note: a side-by-side comparison of the offered card and a black Lenox Wiltse (which also appears elsewhere in this auction as part of a near-complete set) is provided below. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $8,295
