1909-1911 T206 Ty Cobb Bat On Shoulder SGC NM 84 - Sovereign Back

Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $5,925

Graded NM 84 by SGC. Extremely attractive high-grade example of this classic tobacco card of Hall of Famer Ty Cobb with an unusual and desirable Sovereign Cigarettes back. This is the only Ty Cobb bat-on-shoulder example with a Sovereign 150 series back graded at this level by SGC, with none higher. Sovereign is a scarce back, certainly not in the same league as Drum or Uzit, but very unusual and seen far less often than the standard Piedmont or Sweet Caporal advertising backs. The T206 Ty Cobb bat-on-shoulder pose is one of the most classic prewar tobacco cards. Bright and crisp, with bold colors, flawless registration, and sharp corners (the lower right displays a slight amount of wear). Perfectly centered side-to-side and approximately 20/80 top to bottom. The Sovereign reverse is perfectly clean with bold green print, no tobacco stains, and centered to the left. This is a very attractive example of the legendary Ty Cobb from the most popular set of the era in an incredibly high grade worthy of the finest T206 set, Ty Cobb, or Hall of Fame collection. The equivalent SMR value in the assigned grade (without any premium for the Sovereign back) is $5,750. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $5,925
