1909-1911 T206 Wilbur Goode SBC GEM MINT 98 - Interesting Print Anomaly!

Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $1,541

Fascinating example of Wilbur Goode (Cleveland Naps) from the legendary T206 White Border series. This card is noteworthy for two reasons. First, it is in extraordinary high grade, having been professionally graded and encapsulated 98 by SBC (the predecessor to SGC and the company from which the 1-100 grading scale, black insert holder, and other elements were derived). Perfect centering, four razor-sharp corners, and a crisp, clean image with vibrant colors. Boldly printed blue Piedmont advertising reverse. In our opinion, the card has been neatly trimmed along the top border (expertly executed from a sheet or an original, oversized example). While due to changing grading standards over the past twenty-five years it is likely that SGC (or PSA) would not award it the same high grade today (or any numerical grade at all), it is undisputedly one of the finest T206s in existence based strictly on visual appeal. The second noteworthy element about this card is the presence of a large fingerprint in the upper quarter of the image area. This imprint is at first unremarkable, but under close inspection appears to be a well-defined fingerprint which may trace back to a pressman working the line handling sheets of T206s. The T206 set, affectionately known as "The Monster," is the most popular of all 1910-era sets and is still yielding new and exciting discoveries more than a century after its production. As collectors have become more sophisticated, there has been a growing appreciation for all great rarities and unusual cards associated with this landmark set. This is an unusual printing anomaly, in an unparalleled high grade, that will be very much appreciated by collectors of the various nuances found within this iconic set. Reserve $100. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,541
