1909-1911 T206 White Border SGC-Graded Partial Set (335 Different) Including Demmitt, St. Louis Variation
Starting Bid - $10,000, Sold For - $38,513
Presented are 335 different cards from the classic T206 White Border series, representing 64% of a complete set, and highlighted by nineteen Hall of Famers, six scarce Southern Leaguers, and a rare Demmitt/St. Louis variation. There is little need for a formal introduction to the T206 White Borders set, the single most important and highly collected issue among all tobacco and all vintage cards. This is an extremely attractive and clean partial set of 335 cards. The entire collection has tremendous eye-appeal across the board and even the lesser-graded cards are very pleasing and exhibit bright colors and crisp focus. These cards have been consigned by a longtime advanced collector who was very condition conscious and who purchased almost all of his cards in the 1980s and 1990s, prior to the advent of professional grading. Though grading standards have changed over the years, many of these cards were described as Near Mint when purchased, and it is easy to see why, as they present with brilliant colors and a crisp overall appearance. Few cards have creases, and the modestly graded cards in the collection have been downgraded solely due to normal corner and edge wear. It would be a challenge in any era to assemble such an attractive T206 collection, and all the more challenging to find one of this extraordinary quality already assembled and available for sale as a unit today. Any large collection of T206s, of course, naturally has a tremendous break value. This is a very clean, remarkably attractive partial T206 set. Most of the cards have Piedmont or Sweet Caporal backs, but also included are thirteen Old Mill, ten Sovereign, seven Polar Bear, two American Beauty, and two Cycle. Each card is professionally graded and encapsulated by SGC (all submitted by REA). This collection is comprised of forty-nine EX+ 70, 115 EX 60, fifty VG/EX+ 55, twenty-seven VG/EX 50, fourteen VG+ 45, thirty-four VG 40, twenty-two GOOD+ 35, fourteen GOOD 30, four FAIR 20, and six POOR 10.
SGC Grading Composite: EX+ 70 (49 cards): including Chase/dark cap and one Southern Leaguer (Perdue). EX 60 (115 cards): including Bender/no trees, Brown/Wash., Chase/blue portrait, Doyle/hands above head, and Gandil. VG/EX+ 55 (50 cards): including Dahlen/Brooklyn. VG/EX 50 (27 cards): including McGraw/with cap and Wallace. VG+ 45 (14 cards): including Evers/with bat Cubs and Walsh. VG 40 (34 cards): including Chance/yellow portrait, Duffy, Huggins/portrait (Cycle 350), Kelley (Polar Bear), Marquard/follow-through (Polar Bear), Tinker/hands on knees, and two Southern Leaguers (Bay and Fritz). GOOD+ 35 (22 cards): including Cicotte, Marquard/hands at thighs, Smith/Chicago & Boston, and one Southern Leaguer (Ellam). GOOD 30 (14 cards): including Bender/portrait, Joss/portrait (Sovereign 150), Keeler/portrait, Keeler/with bat, Lajoie/portrait, and one Southern Leaguer (Mullaney). FAIR 20 (4 cards): Ames/portrait, Jones/hands at hip, Myers/batting, and Needham. POOR 10 (6 cards): Chase/white cap, Demmitt/St. Louis (Polar Bear), McGraw/finger in air, McGraw/glove at hip, J. Sweeney, and one Southern Leaguer (Kiernan).
As noted, this is a collection with tremendous eye-appeal across the board, with most cards appearing at a glance considerably stronger than suggested by the very respectable and accurate condition composite and individual grades listed above. T206s in PSA NM 7, PSA NM-MT 8, or higher grades have risen to astounding levels that are unaffordable for most collectors. Impressive cards ranging in grade from Vg-Ex to Ex+ condition, of which this partial set is primarily comprised, represent one of the most outstanding values in all vintage-card collecting. This is a beautiful assembly of T206 White Borders, the most popular and classic set of the era, in an extremely desirable overall grade. The equivalent SMR value in the assigned grades is $37,142. This figure calculates the 139 half grades at the lower whole-grade level and does not include any premium for the more desirable advertising backs included within. Total: 335 cards. Reserve $10,000. Estimate $20,000/$30,000. SOLD FOR $38,513
