1909-1911 T206 White Border PSA-Graded Collection (188)

Starting Bid - $800, Sold For - $4,740

Collection of 151 different T206 White Border tobacco cards plus thirty-seven duplicates (for a total of 188 cards), each graded and encapsulated by PSA. Included are Hall of Famer Hugh Duffy, as well as Black Sox star Eddie Cicotte and two scarce Southern Leaguers. This is a particularly interesting collection, which represents 29% of a complete set, in terms of condition in that 138 cards have been graded by PSA with qualifiers while the balance of fifty cards has been assessed as "Authentic." Almost all of the cards are very attractive with many of the technical flaws confined to the reverses or subtly present on the edges. The cards with qualifiers are graded as such due to ink or pencil marks (MK) or miscut fronts or backs (MC). The Authentic cards have almost all been found to show evidence of trimming. All have Piedmont or Sweet Caporal advertising backs. This is part of a larger collection of T206 cards, which we have broken down into several smaller lots organized by condition. In the following condition composite, cards are identified by the numbers provided by the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards checklist. PSA Grading Composite: Two EX-MT 6 (MC): #174 and 393. Three EX-MT 6 (MK): #149, 246, and 257. Three EX 5 (MC): #11, 179, and 354. Five EX 5 (MK): #158, 272, 330, 360, and 458. Five VG-EX 4 (MC): #1, 69, 136, 201, and 270. Twelve VG-EX 4 (MK): #20, 40, 43, 116, 124, 153, 158, 173, 425, 440, 478, and 480. Four VG 3 (MC): #135, 147, 197, and 508. This lot is ideal for the collector who wants real, original circa 1910 tobacco cards which capture the spirit of the history of the game and collecting, but does not want to spend a fortune. A similarly sized collection of numerically graded or unqualified cards would have an SMR value totaling many thousands of dollars, but this collection will most likely sell at a fraction of that cost while in most cases compromising little or nothing in the way of overall visual appeal. This lot would be an outstanding foundation for the assembly of an extremely attractive yet economically-assembled complete set of the legendary T206 White Borders, the most popular and classic prewar-card set in existence. Total: 188 cards. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $4,740
