1911 T205 Gold Borders Christy Mathewson SGC NM 84

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $4,740

Graded NM 84 by SGC. Only two examples graded higher by SGC! Absolutely stunning, ultra high-grade Christy Mathewson card from the T205 Gold Borders, one of the most popular of all 1910-era tobacco issues. This is a simply extraordinary example of one of tobacco-card collecting's great classics. Any T205 Gold Border in this exceptional condition would be a special find, let alone an example of Christy Mathewson. The card is incredibly crisp and clean with virtually no traces of white showing against the easily chipped gold borders. The four corners are sharp with only a tiny area of surface wear visible in the bottom right, which does not detract at all from the overall spectacular visual appeal and is mentioned for the sake of extreme accuracy. Centered slightly to the top right (approximately 70/30 L/R and T/B) with vibrant, flawless colors and perfect registration. The reverse of the card is boldly printed, centered to the left, with light, unobtrusive toning at the top and along the left edge. Piedmont advertising reverse. This is an amazing high-grade T205 example of Christy Mathewson, one of baseball's greatest legends, from one of collecting's most classic and condition-sensitive sets. The equivalent SMR value in the assigned grade is $7,500. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $4,740
