1911 T205 Gold Bolder Near-Complete Set (187/208 Plus Three Variations)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $6,518
The T205 Gold Borders set is universally recognized as one of the most classic of all tobacco-card issues and includes all the great stars of the era and many rarities. Presented is a near-complete set of 187 cards. This set is missing twenty-one cards for a complete basic set (Barger/partial B, Bresnahan/mouth open, Chase/left ear, Dahlen, Ford/white cap, Frick, Graham/Cubs, Grant, Harmon/left ear, Joss, Kleinow, Lee, Raymond, Rowan, Scanlan, Shean/Cubs, Sweeney, Turner, Vaughn, Wallace/one line, and White). This set has been consigned by the family of a very old-time collector who assembled this set decades ago, card by card. Three variations are also included (Dougherty/red sock, Hoblitzell/Cin after 1908, and Leifield/A.P.). Though the cards span a variety of grades, all present with bright colors and crisp focus, and many of the lesser-graded examples still have great eye-appeal. We have selected three cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: Baker (Gd), Barger/full "B" (Vg), Bender (Pr/Fr), Bresnahan/mouth closed (Gd), Brown (Vg), Chance (Pr), Chase/frame extends (Vg, American Beauty), Cicotte/"Black Sox" (Fr), Clarke (trimmed, otherwise Vg, Cycle), Cobb (SGC "Authentic" due to slight trim, otherwise Fr), Collins/mouth closed (Vg+), Collins/mouth open (Fr), Crandall/"t" crossed (Vg-Ex), Donohue (Pr), Doughtery/white sock (Pr), Dougherty/red sox (Vg), Duffy (Gd), Evers (Gd), Fisher (Vg), Ford/black (Gd), Gray/no stats on back (Fr), Griffith (slight trim, otherwise Ex), Hoblitzell/"Cin." after 1908 stat (Gd, American Beauty), Hoblitzell/no "Cin." after 1908 stat (Gd+), Huggins (Pr), Jennings (Fr), Johnson (SGC GOOD 30), Karger (Vg-Ex), Latham/A. Latham on back (miscut, otherwise Ex), Leifield/"A" on front (Fr), Leifield/"A.P." on front (Pr), Marquard (Vg), Mathewson (SGC VG/EX+ 55), McGraw (Vg-Ex), Speaker (Gd), Stahl (Gd), Suggs (Pr/Fr), Tinker (Gd+), Wagner (Pr), Wallace/with cap (Pr), Walsh (Gd), Wheat (Vg+, American Beauty), Wilhelm/"suffe ed" in bio (Fr), Wiltse/right ear (Pr), and Young (Pr). Minor Leaguers: Adkins (Gd), Batch (Gd), Cady (Vg), J. Collins (Fr), Dunn (Gd), Hanford (Gd+), Lee (Vg), McAllister (Pr/Fr), Merritt (Fr), Nee (Pr), and Phelan (Vg+). The balance of the cards grade 10% Vg-Ex, 34% Vg, 46% Pr to Gd, and 10% trimmed. Most of the backs are Piedmont, Sweet Caporal, Hassan, or Honest Long Cut, but also included are American Beauty (four), Cycle (four), Polar Bear (thirty-nine), and Sovereign (four). This is a very attractive near-complete set assembled in the early days of organized collecting, including many of the Hall of Famers, minor leaguers, and rarities that make the T205 Gold Borders set so challenging to complete. The equivalent SMR value for just the graded Johnson and Mathewson cards (factoring in the Mathewson at the lower whole-grade level and not including the other 188 cards!) is $1,200. Total: 190 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $6,518
