1911 T205 Gold Border Ty Cobb SGC NM 84

Starting Bid - $4,000, Sold For - $10,665

Graded NM 84 by SGC. One of only five examples graded at this level by SGC with only one higher! Classic Ty Cobb card from the T205 Gold Border set, one of the most popular of all 1910-era tobacco issues, in exceptionally high grade for this issue. This is an extremely attractive high-grade example of one of card collecting's most classic cards, from what is perhaps card collecting's single most condition-sensitive issue. The card is perfectly centered, with light touches of wear and tiny spots of white showing on the four corners. Virtually flawless gold borders with only a single tiny touch of white on the extreme left edge. This card has bold, striking colors, and near-perfect registration (there is a sliver of yellow showing on the right side of the image where it is slightly off-register). The Hassan advertising on back is entirely clean and centered to the bottom right. Near Mint is a tremendous grade for T205 Gold Borders. This card is one of only five examples graded at this impressive level with just one graded higher (NM/MT 88) out of a total of 296 T205 Cobb examples recorded in the SGC Population Report. In fact, less than two percent of the graded population of all subjects recorded by SGC have reached or exceeded the NM 7 level, which makes this example of Ty Cobb, one of the key cards to the T205 set, even more impressive. Remember, there is only one Cobb in the T205 set (as opposed to four poses in the T206 set), and a grade of NM in T205 is statistically far more significant in the extremely condition-sensitive T205 set than in T206, even without reference to the fact that T205s are much rarer than T206s. Prices of all high-grade T205s are just beginning to reflect the condition-sensitivity of the set, with the market now literally valuing T205s on a different scale than tobacco cards from other sets. This card is a serious condition rarity. This is an exceptionally outstanding high-grade example of Ty Cobb, the key card in the T205 Gold Border set. The equivalent SMR value in the assigned grade is $16,000. Reserve $4,000. Estimate $8,000+. SOLD FOR $10,665
