1911 M131 Baltimore News Newsboys Johnny Evers
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,659
Extremely rare sample card of Chicago Cubs Hall of Famer Johnny Evers from the M131 Baltimore News Newsboys series. The 1911 M131 Baltimore News Newsboys Series set is an incredibly rare baseball-card issue. This set is very similar in design to George Close Candy, but with each player image printed against a light blue background on the front, and with the checklist-reverse featuring advertising along the top, which reads, “The Baltimore News Newsboys Series – Prize of $1.00 to First 35 Boys Getting Full Set of the Following." Based on the reverse advertising, this set may have been a special promotion produced for and marketed exclusively to The Baltimore News newsboys. This type of severely limited distribution would certainly account for their extreme rarity. Jefferson Burdick gave this E94-related issue its own catalog number (M131) in the American Card Catalog because it is clearly a distinct issue from E94. The offered card of Evers is very attractive, with even rounding to the corners, flawless registration, outstanding centering, and a clean, crisp image. Downgraded due to pencil marks in the left border as well as an area of paper loss due to album removal in the center of the otherwise clean reverse. The important "Baltimore News Newsboy Series" line at the top of the card remains entirely clean and ideal for a sample card from this set. Though technically in modest grade, this example from one of the rarest prewar issues in all of card collecting is still bright and attractive, and it would make a significant addition to any Johnny Evers, Hall of Fame, or type-card collection. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,659
