1911-1914 D304 Butter Krust Bread Collection (12) Including Mathewson and Young

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,555

Presented is a collection of twelve different D304 Butter Krust Bread bakery cards (out of just twenty-five in the set), highlighted by eight Hall of Famers, including Christy Mathewson and Cy Young. Similar in design to tobacco and candy cards of the era, D304s measure slightly larger than T206s, at 1.75 x 2.5 inches, and while not "on the radar" of most collectors, are actually considerably rarer than most 1910-era "E" and "T" card issues. The fronts feature very attractive full-color illustrations, each of which is unique to this issue. Issued by a bakery in the Buffalo, New York, area, D304s are actually known with five different back styles (Brunners, Butter Krust, General Baking Co., Weber Bakery, and Martens Bakery). All twelve cards in this lot feature an advertisement for Butter Krust brand bread. Each of the eight Hall of Famers is graded and encapsulated PR 1 by PSA. This collection consists of the following: Baker (HOF), Bender (HOF), E. Collins (HOF), Crawford (HOF), Evers/Chicago (HOF), Fletcher, Kelly, Marquard (HOF), Mathewson (HOF), Rucker, Tenney, and Young (HOF). The four ungraded cards are in similar technically modest but still very collectible condition. This is an outstanding collection of twelve different cards, including a very high concentration of Hall of Famers, from this rare prewar food issue. Total: 12 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $3,555
