1908 E102 Anonymous "Set of 25" Near-Complete Set (27/29)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,148

Rarely seen complete set of all twenty-five players in the E102 Anonymous “Set of 25” plus two of the four pose variations. The manufacturer of this 25-card set is unknown. The fronts are identical in design to their E101 counterparts and can most easily be distinguished by the attractive black-printed checklist of the 25-card complete set on the reverse of each card. Four of the players are found with two variations for a total of 29 cards. This extraordinary E102 collection is missing only Miller/fielding and Wagner/throwing for completion of the 29-card master set. Included are two of the four variation cards (Doyle and Smith). We have selected all nine Hall of Famers to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. The grades are as follows: Bender (VG/EX 50), Cobb (Authentic), Collins (GOOD+ 2.5), Crawford (GOOD 30), Evers (POOR 10), Lajoie (FAIR 20), Mathewson (Authentic), Tinker (VG/EX+ 55), and Wagner/batting (Authentic). The balance grades four Vg, six Fr, and eight Pr (including a few trimmed). One card, Dooin, appears to be a very interesting hand-cut scrap as the borders are irregularly cut and the color is entirely shifted on the card front. Overall, the set presents at a level superior to the technically accurate assigned grades. Caramel cards, because they were issued with candy, one card per package, did not easily escape damage or hold up well to wear over the years. This is a very attractive and very rarely offered near-complete set of E102s (set of 25 plus two of the four pose variations), one of the most classic and colorful of all “E” card issues. Consigned directly from the family of legendary pioneer collector Paul Pollard. Total: 27 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $4,148
