1910 E98 Anonymous "Set of 30" Complete Set (30)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,148

Presented is a complete set consisting of all thirty cards from the E98 “Set of 30” candy-card issue, highlighted by seventeen Hall of Famers, including Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, and Cy Young. This is the first complete set of this issue that we have ever offered. The manufacturer of E98 is unknown, and the set may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E94 specifically); this is an entirely different set even though it uses many of the same subjects and poses. For many years, E98s were among the scarcest of the 1910-era caramel cards, but the recent “Black Swamp Find” has changed the population dramatically. E98s have always been very desirable, and their increased availability and noteworthiness due to the find may have actually increased the demand as more collectors have become familiar with the set. Seventeen Hall of Famers are featured within this set, which also drives its popularity. The offered set, with only five exceptions, is entirely hand cut from a sheet. While we have never seen or heard of an E98 uncut sheet (or even a panel), almost all the cards display irregular borders and vary slightly in size, traits common to hand-cut or sheet-cut cards. Without respect to this flaw (which would only qualify these cards for “Authentic” designations from PSA or SGC), the cards grade eleven Vg, nine Gd, and seven Pr. We have selected three Hall of Famers to be graded by SGC: Chance (FAIR 20), Mack (FAIR 20), Wagner (GOOD 30). The other Hall of Famers featured in this set are Bender, Bresnahan, Brown, Clarke, Cobb, Collins, Evers, Jennings, Lajoie, Mathewson, McGraw, Tinker, Walsh, and Young. Caramel cards in general are much rarer than tobacco cards of the era. Because they were issued with caramels one card per package and sold to children (as opposed to being sold to adults with tobacco), they also tend to survive in a much lower grade. This group represents an outstanding collecting opportunity to acquire a complete set of this desirable caramel-card issue, loaded with Hall of Famers, at a relatively affordable level compared to that of a complete set free of any technical faults. The equivalent SMR value for just the three graded cards (factoring in the Chance and Mack at the lower whole-grade level) is $1,625. This set has been consigned directly from the family of legendary pioneer collector Paul Pollard. Total: 30 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000++. SOLD FOR $4,148
