1911 New York Highlanders Team Composite Postcard Including Hal Chase

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,304

Fascinating and unusual postcard featuring the 1911 New York Highlanders team produced by the Sporty Postal Card Company of Newark, New Jersey. This extremely high quality postcard is designed on a cream-colored stock and depicts manager Hal Chase as the central figure surrounded by twenty-two identified portraits of team members. Chase is pictured in a kilt, a reference to the British military unit, the Gordon Highlanders, from whom the team name was derived. (At this time the New York Americans were known as the "Highlanders".) The team finished sixth in the American League during the 1911 season. This is one of a three-card set issued by the Sporty Postal Card Company. The other teams are the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Athletics. Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC, this card is bright and clean with a crisp image and four strong corners (slightly more wear in the upper right). The reverse is perfectly clean with slight natural toning and a small indentation in the center, which has been treated as a crease during the grading process and is responsible for the modest SGC-assigned grade despite its far superior appearance. We grade this card Excellent. The postcard has not been used. This is an outstanding rarity that would enhance any baseball postcard, Yankees, or prewar-card collection. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+.
