1907-1909 A. C. Dietsche Detroit Tigers Postcard Collection (13) Including Rare 1908 Ty Cobb
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,133
Presented is a newly discovered original-owner collection of thirteen different 1907-1909 A. C. Dietsche Detroit Tigers Postcards, highlighted by a particularly rare example of Ty Cobb from the 1908 (Series 2) set. Originally produced by the Dietsche Postcard Company of Detroit to commemorate the Tigers' participation in the 1907 World Series, these postcards were also issued in two more series, in 1908 and 1909. The three series are distinct; each is identifiable by a copyright year on the reverse and subtle differences to the front (notably the inclusion of a player's last name next to his image). These postcards, which are among the highlights of a "childhood" collection consigned to this auction by the family of the original owner, feature cards from each of the three series: two 1907, ten 1908 (including Cobb and Crawford), and one 1909. The 1908 Dietsche Detroit Tigers Postcard series is considerably rarer than the far better known 1907 Dietsche Tigers set. Even samples from the 1908 issue are rarely seen, and this is only the second collection from this year of any size (including the second Cobb) that we have ever offered. This collection consists of the following: 1) 1907 (Series 1) - 2 cards: Jones and O'Leary. 2) 1908 (Series 2) - 10 cards: Beckendorff, Cobb (HOF, Gd), Crawford (HOF, Pr/Fr), Donovan, Moriarty, Schmidt, Stanage, Summers, Willett, and Works. 3) 1909 (Series 3) - 1 card: Jones. This entire collection would grade very modestly (four cards are Vg, the rest lesser) due to various technical faults, but all present well and none of the postcards shows any evidence of writing or postal use. This 1908 Dietsche Detroit Tigers postcard of Ty Cobb all alone makes this small collection of very special note. Total: 13 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++. SOLD FOR $2,133
