1916 M101-5 Sporting News #171 Casey Stengel SGC NM 84 - 1 of 1 - Highest Graded!

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $711

Graded NM 84. This is the ONLY example graded at this level by SGC, with none higher! Extremely attractive example of Hall of Famer Casey Stengel from the M101-5 Sporting News set. One of the key cards to this classic prewar issue, the M101-5 Stengel is an extraordinarily important and fascinating card, yet is still slightly overlooked by many collectors. Stengel appears in the 1910 T210 Old Mill Tobacco set as a minor leaguer, a card which understandably generates tremendous interest whenever it is offered, but this M101-5 Sporting News is also of enormous significance as it is his first card as a Major Leaguer. Clean and crisp with flawless registration and four strong corners. Centered to the left. Clean reverse with only tiny areas of scattered excess print (entirely unobtrusive on the blank reverse). This is a very sharp-looking example of Casey Stengel's true Major League rookie card from this classic real-photo issue. The equivalent SMR value in the assigned grade is $1,000. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $711
