1911 M116 Sporting Life SGC NM/MT 88, NM/MT+ 92 and MINT 96 Collection (28)

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $10,073

Exceptional ultra high-grade collection of twenty-eight different M116 Sporting Life cards entirely graded and encapsulated by SGC (all submitted by REA). Comprised of one MINT 96, seven NM/MT+ 92s, and twenty NM/MT 88s, these cards were consigned by a longtime advanced collector who purchased these cards long ago (in the days prior to professional grading) and kept them as part of his complete M116 set (consigned to this auction and broken into multiple lots based on condition). Twenty-three of the cards in this collection are the ONLY examples graded at their respective levels with none higher (Eagan, Miller, Pelty, and Purtell each have one other graded at the same level while Parent has two others). The collection consists of the following: MINT 96 (1 card): Hartzell. NM/MT+ 92 (7 cards): Bradley, Carrigan, Needham, O'Connor, Pelty, Richie, and Sullivan. NM/MT 88 (20 cards): Beck, Birmingham, Blackburn, Bridwell, Corridon, Delehanty, Dougherty, Eagan, Foxen, Howell, Hyatt, Lake, LaPorte, Maddox, Milan, Miller, Parent, Phelps, Purtell, and Spade. Sporting Life was a major competitor of The Sporting News in the early part of the twentieth century. The Sporting Life set was issued in 24 series of 12 cards each, sold by mail for four cents per series. M116s are one of the most significant and substantial issues of the era, and are considerably scarcer than their tobacco-card counterparts. This collection represents an extraordinary opportunity to acquire a remarkable high-grade selection of M116 Sporting Life cards. These twenty-eight cards, all of which are in unparalleled NM/MT to MINT condition and which are the highest-graded gems from a complete set broken up in this auction, would serve as tremendous upgrades or additions to any world-class M116 Sporting Life collection. The equivalent SMR value in the assigned grades (factoring in the seven half grades at the lower whole-grade level) is $9,425. Total: 28 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $10,073
