1911 M116 Sporting Life SGC-Graded Collection (169)

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $8,888

Presented is a collection of 152 different (plus seventeen duplicates) from the classic M116 Sporting Life series, highlighted by five Hall of Famers, including Bresnahan, Plank, and Tinker, as well as Black Sox star Eddie Cicotte. Each card is graded and encapsulated by SGC (all submitted by REA). These cards were part of a complete M116 set consigned to this auction by a longtime advanced collector who assembled the set in the 1980s and 1990s. The set has been broken into multiple lots in this auction. This is by far the largest of the lots. (Other lots include some groups of extremely high grade cards, Hall of Famers, and Blue Background series cards.) The offered collection features 151 of the 287 different cards in a complete basic set and also includes one variation (forty variations exist in the master set). The M116 card set was issued by Sporting Life ("The Paper That Made Baseball Popular"), and by any measure is one of the most important sets of the era. Sporting Life was no doubt encouraged by the success of the popular tobacco cards of the day, and this issue shares a similar design with them. Sporting Life was a major competitor of The Sporting News in the early part of the twentieth century. The Sporting Life set was issued in twenty-four series of twelve cards each, sold by mail for four cents per series. This is an especially attractive collection with almost all cards presenting as bright and crisp with strong corners and colors. In the following condition composite, cards are identified by the numbers provided by the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards checklist. SGC Grading Composite: EX/NM+ 82 (17 cards): #12, 14, 27, 35, 70b, 72, 82, 100, 110, 115, 116, 139, 163, 186, 252, 275, and 286. M116s are one of the most significant and substantial issues of the era, and are considerably scarcer than their tobacco-card counterparts. This very impressive group with numerous highlights would serve as a tremendous foundation for the assembly of an outstanding complete M116 set. The equivalent SMR value (factoring in the sixty-five half grades at the lower whole-grade level and excluding the thirteen cards graded "Authentic") is $10,929. Total: 169 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$7,500+. SOLD FOR $8,888
