2008 Authenticated Ink Penny Card Collection (304) Featuring Presidents, Historical Figures, Pop-Culture Icons, and More!

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,778

Fascinating collection of 304 different cards from the Authenticated Ink penny card series, featuring U.S. Presidents, historical figures, pop-culture icons, and other important people and things spanning the years 1861 to 2008. This series features black-and-white images or sketches produced on thick cardboard stock measuring 2.5 x 3.5 inches. An authentic Lincoln penny is inserted into each card, with the year of the penny corresponding to the image, ranging from 1861 (Stonewall Jackson takes command) to 2008 (Barack Obama elected President). The reverse of each card is blank. We have seen these cards offered on eBay for several years and have always admired their design and the interesting use of a year-specific penny to accent the card. There always appeared to be a healthy demand for the cards as the combination of vintage and modern appealed to a wide array of collectors. The cards also take collectors through a great visual history when presented together in a collection such as this, which has been compiled by a dedicated collector over a period of several years. (The entire collection is actually larger and has been broken up into three separate lots in this auction organized by subject). Though put together for fun, the assemblage of the collection also naturally involved a considerable investment of both time and expense. While no checklist exists for this series that we aware of, the offered assembly must represent a tremendous percentage of the cards produced. Almost any famous person from the past 150 years that one can imagine is represented: Presidents from Lincoln to Obama; historical figures, including Geronimo, Al Capone, Albert Einstein, and Neil Armstrong; entertainers, including the Three Stooges, the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, and Jimi Hendrix; sport figures, including Roger Bannister, Richard Petty, and Michael Phelps; and non-people icons, including the Enola Gay, the Statue of Liberty, and various U.S. military planes and ships. All cards in this collection present as Near Mint or better (some may have almost imperceptible wrinkles on the back that would cause them to technically grade more modestly despite a better appearance). The pennies are almost all bright and clean, with minimal tarnishing visible on some of the older examples. Two cards (Chief Joseph and Rutherford B. Hayes) are missing the penny. This is a very substantial collection of these unique and interesting cards that have received little attention but have quietly developed a great following among collectors. It is easy to see why. These cards appear to be offered on eBay only one card at a time, suggesting that a collection of 304 as offered here may be extremely unusual or perhaps even unprecedented. Will these someday be recognized as modern classics? Only time will tell. But it is hard not to appreciate the thought, concept, and substantial construction (incorporating an actual penny in the design of each card) of this unique set devoted to American history and culture. Total: 304 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,778
